Made famous by team leaders Gianni Bugno and Tony Rominger, this bold Chateaux D'Ax 1989 team jersey is the latest classic team jersey to be added to my online collection!
Manufacturer: Moa Nalini
Associated Bike Brand: F.Moser Bikes
Gianni Bugno was an extremely versatile rider, able to win grand tours as well as winning spring classics too. I was lucky enough to witness his win at the 1994 Tour of Flanders (riding for the Polti) beating the firm and local favourite Johan Museeuw on his own turf - which as you can imagine went down like a lead balloon in the bar we dived in!
Unfortunately for Bugno, he lived in Miguel Indurain's shadow at the Tour de France, but he did win the 1990 Giro D'Italia, incredibly leading from start to finish!
I never owned this jersey back in the day as I was never actually a fan of it - this jersey was purchased specifically to feature in my Art of the Jersey book. It's the start of too many logos appearring on jersey designs making them a little too busy and jumbled. Not overly keen on the gnome like figure either - not really sure why he's there!
But I did own a team-issue F Moser AX Leader team bike which I raced successfully for a number of seasons, although the bike was a heady three-colour mix of metallic navy, white and and shocking neon pink all of which was painted on - no decals!
