The UCI Road World Cup was an excellent idea for the one-day specialists in the peloton. The season-long competition comprised of events throughout the season - mainly the spring and autumn classics - with points allocated for a top 25 finish.
Starting in 1989, the UCI developed a jersey design with Santini for the leader so that they could be clearly identified in the peloton and of course it was important that it was different to the rainbow jersey of the current world champion.
Rather than the horizontal bands of the world champion, the world cup leader had a vertical band of colours on a white jersey which more often than not was interrupted by a sponsor panel on the front and rear of the jersey.
The competition was replaced at the end of the 2004 season with the UCI ProTour with it`s own leaders jersey.
