The Polti jersey was made by Santini throughout it's history and is one that often appears in people's worst jersey lists!
Associated Bike Brand: Coppi Bikes
Polti started out life as a sub-sponsor to Lampre, gaining headline sponsorship status in 1994. I saw it in the flesh that year when Bugno outsprinted home favourite Johan Museeuw at the '94 RVV and then again when the TdF visited Brighton & Portsmouth. The only riders who ever looked good in it, Bugno aside, where Silvio Martinello and Axel Merckx in my opinion.
I don't think the early incarnations were too bad, 1998 saw it loose the green accents in favour of a red top half as well as the addition of the "Golden M" of MacDonalds with the 1999 version adding a scoop (that would find it's way onto the Selle Italia in time). But the final year saw Santini add celeste side panels and collars/cuff which is something normally associated with Bianchi providing support as a bike supplier but they were still riding Fausto Coppi bikes - so I'm really not sure what that was all about!
Still - that final version is pretty close to hideous. If you take a look at the images, I've provided a scanned page from Santini's 2000 professional team clothing which was made available to the public. You have to remember that there were no "rules" back then and people were more than happy to buy and wear pro team clothing.
