This Santini jersey is the design that Filippo Pozzato settled on for his Italian National Champion jersey.
Rightly or wrongly, Filippo "Pippo" Pozzato gained a bit of a reputation during his early pro years as a bit of a player. Too many photographs with Italian super cars in magazines or perhaps fans wanted him to become Mario Cipollini`s replacement.
After turning professional with the Mapei team, he passed through Fassa Bortolo, Quick Step, Liquigas ending up with Team Katusha for the 2009 - 2011 seasons.
Without doubt the highlight of a stella 2009 season was Pozzato`s win in his national championships in front of Damiano Cunego and Luca Paolini.
Whilst Pozzato was presented with a standard maglia tricolore by Sportful, he went through three different designs in total before finally settling on this one. The others featured a silhouette of Kremlin over the top of the bands, another with the bands placed vertically on the jersey but the Italian Cycling Federation were not happy!
It`s easy to criticise, but if I had won a national title and was entitled to wear the jersey for a year I`d want to look my best too!
All was forgotten by the tifosi when Pozzato took the win at stage 12 of the 2010 Giro D`Italia with his hands aloft in the national champion jersey.
